NXNE 2012: PREVIEW

The 5 Bands to Watch at NXNE 2012
As we prepare to head off to this year's North By Northeast, we wanted to review some of the acts we are looking forward to at this years installment of NXNE.

Gold & Youth
If you find yourself walking down Queen Street West on the Thursday of NXNE, make sure to get down to the Rivoli to check out this Vancouver buzz band. Their mix of Synth & Drum Loop set a moody tone for their haunting lyrics. This is a show not to be missed.

Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers
Having witnessed this bearded wonder at the CN Tower during the opening of this year's Canadian Music Week. I can tell you, if you choose this evening set at the Horseshoe on the Thursday. That you will be entertained by this blues-folk virtuoso from Sound Check to the last note played.

Bran Van 3000
Every year ,NXNE pulls a rabbit out of their 90's hat and this year is no different. As we'll get a chance to basque upon the Montreal Pop glory that is Bran Van 3000. From Drinking in L.A., to Couch Surfing to Astounded, this late night show on the Thursday schedule is reason to get your dancing shoes on.

Rah Rah
Unlike the Saskatchewan plains that helped forge their laid back blend of Alt. Country Pop, this band is anything but flat. What better way than working your way on a Friday Night to the Dakota Tavern to catch this exciting prairie pop delicacy.

Dusted
In a day where Side Projects and Second Bands aren't out of the ordinary, it is very rare that you see one that stand out as much as Holy Fuck's Brian Borcherdt new project Dusted does.  This Lo-Fi pop outfit astounds with it's stripped down accompaniment, uplifitng lyrics and tinge of electronic fuzz. Those qualities alone should give you reason make it up through the wiles of Chinatown to get to the El Macombo to witness this brillance on a Thursday night.

The 5 Comedians to Watch at NXNE 2012

Aaron Berg
With 5 shows on the docket, he is one of the busiest comedians at this year's festival. With razor sharp observations to riotously funny stories delivered at a machine gun pace, you'll see why he is one of the most respected comedians in all of Canada.

Amanda Brooke Perrin
Don't let that wholesome Alberta veneer fool you, this young woman is one of the sharpest wits in Canadian Comedy today. Her mix of rye wit and word play makes her one of attractions to watch at this years festival.

Mouth Congress
Though the side projects might not be rare in music, when it comes to comedy it is a sight only seen once in a blue moon. This comedy music twosome re-teams one of Canadian Comedy's most recognizable faces in Scott Thompson with one of his fellow Writers on Kids in the Hall the very talented Paul Bellini. Their lo-fi comedy offerings will either leave you rolling in the seats or leave you mystified to what you have just seen. Either way mission accomplished.

Rick & Chuck
Spawned by the Toronto's renown sketch troupe "The Boom", this brainchild of Eytan Millston and Jays Wells L'Ecuyer, weaves gangster rap, a grade 8 sense of humor, and wild violent imagery in a hilarious tableau of comedic destruction. Do yourself a service and look up their video for "We's Hawd."

K. Trevor Wilson
Considered by most to be one of the hardest working comedians working in Toronto. This burly bearded raconteur of life's little foibles is one of the premier storytellers on this years docket.
